The Ophiuchus Question: Why Was the 13th Zodiac Sign Removed?

Between November 29 and December 17, the sun passes through the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer. This is not alternative astronomy or esoteric interpretation — it is the observable, measurable path of the sun through the sky as viewed from Earth. The International Astronomical Union includes Ophiuchus in the list of constellations the ecliptic passes through.

And yet Ophiuchus is not one of the twelve signs of the Western zodiac. It was excluded — deliberately removed from the zodiacal system — to maintain the count at twelve.

The Official Explanation

The official explanation offered for Ophiuchus's exclusion is historical and practical: the Western zodiac was standardised by Babylonian astronomers around 700 BC, who divided the ecliptic into twelve equal segments of 30 degrees each, corresponding to the twelve months of the year. Ophiuchus, while present, did not fit neatly into this twelve-fold division.

This explanation is coherent. It does not, however, explain why the decision to maintain twelve was non-negotiable. The Babylonians were sophisticated enough astronomers to observe Ophiuchus's presence. The choice to exclude it was exactly that — a choice.

The Symbolism of Ophiuchus

Ophiuchus is depicted in ancient astronomical texts as a man holding a serpent — specifically Serpens, the Serpent constellation. The imagery connects directly to ancient healing traditions: the Rod of Asclepius (a staff entwined with a serpent) is still the symbol of medicine. The Caduceus (two entwined serpents around a winged staff) is associated with Hermes/Mercury. Serpent symbolism across ancient traditions represents healing, transformation, wisdom, and hidden knowledge.

The sign associated with healing, transformation, and the serpent wisdom was the one that was removed.

The 13th Month in the Ytinu Accord

The Ytinu Accord calendar restores Ophiuchus as the zodiac sign of the 13th month — the Null month, November 23 to December 20. The month of the Voidwalkers. The month before the Void Day — the Winter Solstice, December 21, the day outside the calendar.

The Ytinu Accord does not invent anything. It restores what was always there.
